Is a Long-term Lease or a Serviced Office Best for You?

A Serviced Office might be a solution that makes sense for your business at this point in its evolution
Photo by CC user jnyemb on Flickr

The time has come to leave the garage and find office space for you and your business. However, it’s not as simple as just finding a convenient location and signing on the dotted line. There are some considerations you need to make before you make your choice.

Are you a start-up?

There’s been a huge rise in the numbers of start-up businesses since the crash of 2008 and all these enterprises need a home! It might seem best to find somewhere secure and long term, but short-term offices may be best.

For a start, office space is expensive and hard to find and so can cost a lot. This, combined with the fact that start-ups may fail, makes a serviced office a better option. It’s much easier to pick up and leave that short-term office space in Brentford with a month’s notice than to get out of a five-year lease.

Additionally, serviced offices have all the utilities a small business will need included in the monthly fee – internet, phones, cleaner, business rates and insurance. It’s cheaper and easier for a young business to pay for these as a package, without even having to look for them!

Do you plan to expand?

If you hope to employ new people in the next 12 months or so, then you need a space in which you can expand and serviced offices can offer this. On the other hand, if you need to downsize, you can do that too, probably with just a month’s notice.

How many people do you have currently?

If you employ fewer than 10-15 people, it can be hard to find long-term premises that small, especially in London. A shared office is the ideal solution here, especially when you consider the utility packages.

How long do you want the office for?

If you’re confident that you can meet the five-year commitment, then you may be better off in a long-term lease. The business world is unpredictable right now, so flexibility is essential – you may need to move back to your garage or garden room and you certainly don’t want to have to buy your way out of a fiddly lease.

How quickly do you need it?

Setting up a conventional lease can take up to three months, whereas finding a suite or a room in a serviced office space can take anything from a few days to a week.

What’s your budget?

This is a big deal, and like most things, it’s not as simple as it seems.

Conventional office space is cheaper by the square foot, but there are many, many costs on top. There’s telecoms, furniture, buildings insurance, business rates, cleaners – all the things that are taken care of by a serviced office fee. There’s also the not inconsiderable cost of drawing up a lease agreement and the crippling costs of early vacation.

So a serviced office space will look more on paper, but this is because you’re looking at the price per desk.

Confessions of a Solo Traveller!

The average Solo Traveller has much wisdom to impart to first timers...
Photo by CC user ktoine on Flickr

“Not all those who wander are lost.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring.

To the ones that arrive at it, travelling is contagious! Once you’ve made friends with your inner globe trotter, there’s no saying “No” to travel – which even includes discovering a lost structure in your own city! I have often seen people that don’t travel or travel less wonder what’s the fuel that keeps every traveller moving? There are great travel offers that tempt one to travel a little more now a days. We seem not to stop. At all. I say, it’s “Curiosity” – The curiosity to stretch the vision and discover what lies beyond that big old oak tree that is stationed at the backyard. Not many would be interested, but the traveller. I love travelling and exploring!

So when did I touch base with my inner voyageur? Back during my school days when I used to come back home alone! My school bus used to drop me to a nearby by juncture. From there to my house, it was a solo walk that I had. And on my way sometimes I would traverse to the narrow lanes of my locality and sit beside a rivulet. And on other times I would wander about in a temple shrine, tea stall and even an old English watch shop that was located in an extreme corner of a lane. In retrospect I realize, that was the time when I had made a secret pact with the Universe that someday I would travel alone.

On My Travelling Alone

Sometimes I see people coming up with an eyebrow raising reaction on the aspect of travelling alone! Most are scared or I should say inhibited to take that leap! But when you travel alone an entire new world opens up for you. I can say this with confidence today, because I have been on a solo tour to Istanbul and explored places like Marrakesh and Morocco. That first trip as a solo traveller was one to remember.

There’s no denying that I love to travel and experience new cultures! That’s the reason I chose Istanbul. The oriental world that throws images of “Arabian Nights” with its streets selling the Moroccan lamps, Turkish rugs and jewelleries and other accessories stirs the soul. I always felt that maybe walking into a vast ancient building or monument whilst travelling alone might make me feel really isolated and lonely. To my surprise it was quite the opposite. On my solo tour to Istanbul and Turkey as I walked into the great, grand hall of Hagia Sophia, I felt connected to the whole space around me. I recalled a quote by my favourite poet Rumi that says “Wherever you stand, be the soul of the place”. It was here in Hagia Sophia that I could feel the real essence of the line. The overwhelming ceiling and golden vault of this basilica, mosque and museum atop me made feel that I am not alone. I never was, even when I used to wander on the streets of my locality.

To travel alone means to travel with freedom! You seem to break free from your inner confinements of letting society judge you. Travelling gives perspective, pleasure and confidence to finally become the real version of who you are! It made me carefree and a wanderer – that’s what I am.

Does Someone Else Know Your Identity Too?

Does Someone Else Know Your Identity? Some shadowy hacker might...
Photo by CC user YBS 999 on Wikimedia Commons

Your personal identity information (especially as it pertains to finances) should be one of your most closely guarded secrets, yes? Having said that, does someone else know your identity?

While most consumers take this question to heart, others are not quite as thoughtful. In fact, some prove to be downright careless.

In a day and age where identity theft can set you back for a number of years, avoiding it should always be a high priority.

Even though there are certain events you need to put in motion to best protect your identity, much of it centers on having the right identity theft protection in place. When you have that, you are already a step ahead of the criminals.

With that in mind, how will you go about making sure someone else (notably online criminals) does not know your identity?

Take a Stance Against Online Criminals

So that you can decrease the chances you will become a victim of identity theft, start out by making sure you have a reliable defense against these criminals.

That all starts by finding the best identity theft protection service out there, one that will have your back from the day you begin using the product.

Finding such a service can be a little tedious, but the time and effort you invest in doing just that will ultimately prove well worth it.

Whether you are swayed to go with LifeLock identity protection or another such provider, make sure you vet each and every company you consider.

For starters, look at how long they have been in business?

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with considering newer companies on the market, those having been around for a number of years tend to be a better bet. The experience, plus learning what does and does not work over time, typically adds up to a better result for the consumer when all is said and done.

Secondly, never underestimate the importance of customer service.

As great as a company’s product may be, it is an even better overall brand when its customer service is as good as can be.

Once you have a provider selected, you may have simple questions or possibly even run into a snafu or two at some point and time. This is why customer service can never be taken for granted.

One of the ways to better determine how stout a company’s customer service is will be by asking family members (outside your home), friends, even co-workers, about which I.D. protection service they opted to go with.

In today’s business world, most companies know that wasting the time of customers is a sure ticket to ultimately losing their business. Find that provider willing to go the extra mile for you without hesitation.

You Must Be Responsible Too

With the right provider on your side monitoring your financial details, the rest pretty much all boils down to you.

Even with a solid identity theft monitoring provider backing you up that does not mean you are 100 percent immune from those wishing to do you harm, notably in terms of your finances.

Make sure you do not voluntarily give out any personal information, information that could easily come back to haunt you.

Just as you would not leave a credit card, your bank account number, your Social Security I.D. etc. sitting around in public places for the entire world to see, it is imperative you cover your tracks online too.

If you plan on traveling over the summer or at any point during the year, be careful when using computers in public places, places including hotels and libraries.

Since it is hard for you (or any traveler for that matter) to know with 100 percent certainty as to whether or not the server you are on is totally safe, err on the side of caution.

In the event you need to do any online banking or other personal financial matters while traveling, do them on your mobile device (assuming that is that it is already protected).

Keeping identity theft thieves and other online criminals with ill intent at bay can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be a losing proposition.

Just remember that there are services out there to assist you, services to keep someone else from knowing your identity.

Where Will Your Career Take You?

Where Will Your Career Take You?
Photo by CC user geralt on Pixabay

Do you know where you career will take you?

Some individuals have just about everything laid out to a tee. Others, meantime, pretty much go with the flow, not knowing where they might be working a year or even six months from now.

No matter where you might fall in this mix, it is important to not overlook the importance of your career, especially in a day and age when jobs have become tougher to find for so many individuals.

That said focusing on where the job market in general is headed, which industries expect to continue to see growth in the coming years, and what strategies workers will have to employ to stay relevant are all important matters.

So, where will your career take you?

Educate Yourself Often

One of the ways to stay relevant in the job market now and in the future is of course education.

That education comes in two forms; the education you learn in the classroom and the education you get each and every day watching the world around you.

For the former, it is important to note what level of education you have up to this point and time, especially as it pertains to your current career.

Do you need more education to further yourself in your current industry? With added education, will it put you where you ultimately want to be? Lastly, do you have the available resources (time, effort, money etc.) to go back to school while still working?

When it comes to the education you can receive from watching the world around you, this can be just as important as any coursework you undertake.

For example, if you currently work in the healthcare industry, you know that technology is always changing how things are done in most instances. What is being used today to treat diseases, operate on patients, offer hope to those who likely did not have hope just a couple decades ago, these things are for the most part progressing.

With that in mind, how will your healthcare career be impacted now and in the years to come?

Whether you are looking at careers as a medical technician, surgeon, gis careers, working in mental health, you need to stay abreast of the changes going on around you. This is important whether you have been employed for many years in healthcare or are just beginning to get your feet wet.

Going Online for Education

If you decide at this point and time that you will require more hands-on education in the classroom, be it possibly a master’s degree, the options today for the most part are better than what was available even a decade or two ago.

Now, many in the healthcare industry can turn to online studies to better their skills and knowledge. By taking the required online courses for their healthcare specialty, they are able to be compliant with today’s medical needs.

In the event you are one of those individuals looking to do just that, here are a few tips for getting the process started:

  • Selection – First and foremost, making the right selection on a school and its coursework is crucial. While you may be limited in some of your options, don’t just settle. Make sure you ultimately get the added educational requirements you need;
  •

  • Timing – One of the key facets in this situation is properly managing your time, time that will likely be divided between work and going back to school. It can be overwhelming for some people, while others will take the ball and run with it. Make it known to family and friends (if you decide this is the route you are going to go) that they need to be respectful and understanding of your demanding schedule. In most cases, those closest to you while understand and be very supportive;
  •

  • Focus – Lastly, make sure you are clearly focused on improving your career outlook through more education (if needed) and becoming more of a leader in the workplace. It is easy for people to at times lose their focus, but that can of course prove to be quite detrimental. When you put all of your focus into achieving your goals, the results can be quite satisfying.

Save your iPhone – Use a Skin

iPhones are both expensive and fragile. They’re also attached to you by the hip, going wherever your day takes you. If you expect to be able to use your Apple Pay while on the office’s coffee run or Google Maps to find the best route to your dinner date, you’re going to want your phone to withstand anything you throw at it. When on the look-out for the top security and protection, there’s no better way to save your iPhone than with a 3M vinyl skin.

Save your iPhone from damage by getting a tough protective skin for it

You may know this form of protection by its other name: a decal. But a skin does way more than what the term ‘decal’ implies. Besides adding a pop of color to your phone, the vinyl material of an iPhone skin is incredibly resilient against scratches, scuffs, and other cosmetic damages that can ruin the sleek, polished looks of the smartphone. They’re also a great way to defend against the build-up of grease and grime that can clog the phone’s buttons or dirty its backing.

On your search for the best skins iPhone users can hope for, you’ll encounter a lot of companies offering intriguing styles. Unfortunately, not all of them will be able to back up their fashion sense with protection. Not all skin creators are dedicated to your iPhone’s well-being like the designers at dbrand, where they put security first. They uphold their promises of superior protection by starting with high quality 3M vinyl. They’ve developed a highly refined process wherein they can cut this material with the utmost precision, affording their skins a fit that matches Apple’s design down to the micro-millimeter. The best iphone skins at dbrand.com add only 0.23 mm once applied, offering a slim addition that fits.

Of course, once you find a provider that can guarantee well-fitted protection, then you can turn your attention to its looks. Check out the amazing selection of designs available online. In terms of functionality, Apple is one of the greatest manufacturers of phones right now, but the company’s dedicated to a minimalist style that doesn’t mesh with everyone’s personality. Luckily, iPhone skins can add a punch of color (like magenta, blue, or red to name a few) or a sense of individuality with textures (like concrete, wood, and carbon fiber).

In a sea of look-a-like iPhones, you neon pink carbon fiber will certainly turn heads, but its beauty is more than skin deep. Backed by durable 3M vinyl, it’s the best way to defend your smartphone, so it’s ready to take on the day and go wherever you need to take it. Invest in the top security for your iPhone. You won’t be disappointed.

More Businesses Checking Their Climate Footprint

With carbon taxes looming, knowing one's climate footprint is important these days
Photo by CC user wheatfields on Flickr

In a world today where so much attention is focused on protecting the climate, more and more businesses are stepping up to do their part.

Whether it is doing more recycling around the office, purchasing and using office supplies that can then be recycled, getting involved in community cleanup activities, the list can go on and on.

That said what is your company doing to leave a positive footprint or two on the planet?

In the event you have been stymied as to how you can go about doing your part as a business owner or even an employee for that matter, don’t feel defeated.

As you will discover with just a little research, there are myriad of ways to contribute to helping the environment.

With that being the case, will your business be checking its climate footprint anytime soon?

Be Proactive and Creative

So that your business can be like Las Vegas Sands Corporation and others out there helping preserve the environment, remember these pointers:

    1. Research – First and foremost, work together with your employees to come up with ways your brand can contribute. While some ideas might pop into your head in a moment’s notice, others may take a little more doing. Hold occasional office meetings on this very topic, giving the entire staff a chance to knock heads together and come up with smart ideas. Given that many workplace meetings can be downright dull and unproductive, make these “climate” meetings fun. You can come up with ways (see more below) to encourage participation out of even the most reserved of employees;

    1. Contests – What employee doesn’t like a little contest every now and then? To help contribute to saving the environment, your brand can have the occasional contest, having various departments compete against one another in a friendly meeting of the minds. Most importantly, remind employees that these efforts are all for a good cause. You could have such contests as which department can manage to total the most cans, bottles, or even papers recycled. For something different during the week, give employees the option of working a half day on the weekends for a workplace recycling or community cleanup project. In return for participating, employees can have a half day off during a workday. Another option is to have your employees (those who reside not too far from the office and within a safe riding distance) bike to work one day a week, thereby giving their vehicles a rest. In doing so, they keep emissions lowered (at least one day a week). Getting away from driving also reduces the chances for an accident, though it is important that any employees cycling to and from the office do so in a safe manner. The employee who ends up cycling the most miles to work would win a prize, perhaps a gift certificate or even a day off. As you can see, there are many different options to consider, so get your thinking caps on;

  1. Promotions – It is also a good idea to promote any and all activities your business is doing to lessen its climatic footprint on the globe. Start an online newsletter going around the office, one that highlights all the various activities employees are doing to help the environment. Not only does this make the employees feel good about their efforts, but it encourages those who may not be participating just yet to give it a second thought. While you should never pressure or even force any worker into such a project, he or she may be more inclined to do it once they see the results and quite frankly fun others are having.

Businesses willing to check their climate footprints certainly do score some points with consumers in general.

As a result, they not only get their brands out in front of consumers, but they give them more reason to want to become a customer sooner rather than later.

If your business has been a little slow to helping the environment out up to now, change that moving forward.

As a company, your employees will feel better about their overall workplace efforts, while your brand will certainly receive some positive public relations in the process.

The Various Benefits Offered by Bariatric Surgery Support Groups

More and more people turn to weight loss surgery in order to address their obesity. Bariatric surgery is major surgery, however. Not only is it a major procedure, and one not without risk, it is also a life changing procedure. You must change your entire lifestyle, eating habits, and exercise regime. And you must get used to becoming a whole new person, half the person you were before in size, but twice the person you were before in health. Unsurprisingly, people may have quite a bit of apprehension about having such a procedure done. Luckily, various support groups exist to help them before, during, and after the procedure. These groups are there to discuss important medical issues such as diet and exercise regimes, but also to talk about emotional issues, fears, coping problems, adjustment, and more.

Adjustable_Gastric_Band

What Are Bariatric Support Groups

In most cases, the hospital in which your procedure is completed will also host a support group. However, the also exist in your own community, as well as online. They are designed to be a forum for those who have had surgery, but also for those who are considering the procedure. They have an educational role, talking about eating a healthy, nutritious diet and about exercise regimes. They also discuss what to expect before, during, and after the procedure and have quite a strong focus on the recovery period. In person meetings are usually organized weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. Various experts, including bariatric surgeons, participate in these meetings. They will hold presentations about what to expect and they may also discuss possible complications. This helps people to have a realistic view of what to expect and also helps to reduce any fear and misgivings they may have. Sometimes, hospital organized groups will also run seminars where issues such as treatment options, the effects of obesity, and the pros and cons of surgery are discussed.

Before having bariatric surgery, patients have to prepare themselves both psychologically and physically. This is why surgeons also ensure their patients go to counseling sessions before they have surgery. This is done for two reasons. Firstly, it helps the patient prepare properly for what they can expect, and what will happen after the surgery. During these sessions, they will hear about how their family members can help, and the stresses that the family can place on recovery as well, about their exercise options, and about dietary requirements. Secondly, it is an opportunity for the surgeon to determine whether the patient has the proper motivation to make the procedure a success and to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

After the procedure, patients will usually continue to receive counseling to prepare them for the challenges of their new life. The physical recovery period of this type of surgery is around six weeks, but psychological recovery takes much longer. Once a person starts to lose weight, they change and those around them change as well. This can be difficult to adjust to.

Are You Driving Down the Wrong Path in Life?

Each time you get behind the wheel, there is always the risk for an accident.

Even if you are the safest driver going, it just takes one wrong decision, being in the wrong place at the wrong time etc. to turn one’s life upside down.

What can complicate things even more is if someone decides to have a few drinks before getting behind the wheel of their vehicle. At that point, all bets are off as to what may happen.

That said could you be driving down the wrong path in life?

Finding the Best Legal Team When Required

If you do run afoul of the law, what do you plan to do regarding getting legal help to fight your case?

In some cases, you may have no choice other than to have a public defender appointed to your cause.

In many other instances, you might be able to afford the lawyer of your choice, a decision that you should never take for granted.

If you were accused of DWI in Houston, where do you start?

For many defendants, finding the right legal help oftentimes comes down to asking the opinions of family and friends, along with turning to the Internet to see who comes most highly recommended.

In the event you do work your way over to the Internet for legal help, make sure you look at both lawyer websites and their social media initiatives.

For the former, check the “about us” section of each and every website.

Look to see how long the lawyer has been in business, what is practice areas prove to be, what kind of success to failure rate he or she may tout, and if they offer free consultations etc.

Social Aspect Growing in the Legal Field

When it comes to legal representatives on social media, more and more lawyers are finding social networking to their liking.

Take a bit of time to see where they are most active, be it LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc.

From there, you can receive a better feel for how they interact with the public, including those they either have or might defend.

If the conversations indicate the clients were happy with the services; that is certainly a plus in considering that lawyer for your needs. In the event the opposite is true, it is important to think about whether or not you really want that lawyer backing you in a courtroom.

Make Your Own Smart Choices

Not that they are bad people, but avoiding lawyers altogether is oftentimes under your control.

If you have an itch to drink and drive, you should not be out on the roads in the first place.

As all too many drivers (and passengers for that matter) have unfortunately discovered over time, it just takes a fleeting moment and bad judgment to change the lives of one or more people forever.

If you feel the need to always drink when going out in public (establishments, homes of other people etc.), you are best-served when you find a ride home, especially when you think you had one too many to drink.

Finally, always watch out for friends and family when you are out celebrating with them.

Something as simple as a Happy Hour drink or two after work can turn tragic if someone you are with doesn’t know when to call it a night. If you see such a scenario unfolding, do your best to convince him or her that they are better off letting someone else drive them home, even if it means retrieving their vehicle the next day.

While you may go your entire life without ever dealing with a lawyer and/or setting foot in a courtroom, the odds are more in favor of you doing one or both things.

That said choosing the best lawyer to deal with your DWI case is not something you just casually do.

He or she can oftentimes make the difference between you getting off rather easily given the circumstances and finding your life spiraling out of control.

When faced with a DWI, make sure you appreciate the seriousness of the charge, meaning who you select as your legal representative is equally important.

Essay: What Freedom of Speech Means to Me?

Freedom of Speech is the right of all free people

An important basic human right

Every US citizen is protected by the First Amendment in the Constitution which guarantees freedom of speech and is acknowledging it as an important basic human right. This has important implications, such as the fact that citizens have the right to express their personal opinions and with that also comes the responsibility to protect the original goals of the US government.

There is no limit upon freedom of speech and this basic right can be used where ever a person may find himself as long as the person exercising that right does not interfere with the constitutional right of other US citizens. Any nation where people have lost their right to freedom of speech is ultimately poorer and weaker.

Without freedom of speech people loses the right to express their beliefs and this is a really a very sad situation because every human being should have the basic right to be able to speak when things is not right and they should not be hindered when they do so.

Without freedom of speech effective organizations with specific goals to up lift society will have very limited effect because they will have no way of expressing what they believe. Fortunately this is not the situation in the US because citizens have the right to speak out about many things because of the basic right of freedom of speech.

Interaction between public and government

There should to be a healthy interaction between citizens and their government and this can only be accomplished when there is freedom of speech. In a democratic government everyone participates and everyone has a contribution to make to the success and growth of the government but without freedom of speech as one of those basic citizens’ rights none of this will be possible.

The reality is also that freedom is not merely a description of something it goes way beyond that. Freedom should in its fullest sense be a way of life and it should be a continuation of those initial goals of the founding fathers of the US which forms the basis for the freedom which is enjoyed by citizens in this country.

As every citizen knows the civil rights as far as the US is concerned is contained in the bill of rights which is one of the most important documents as far as US citizenship goes. Freedom of speech is the ability to speak out for those things which is considered to be necessary and it is the ability to do so without persecution which is making this basic right so valuable.

There are many countries where people do not have the right of freedom of speech and those people have no say in those matters which concerns their governments and their society.

No longer slaves but free people

The citizens of many countries is still effectively in slavery because they have no real freedom. They cannot express themselves as free people do. US citizens is fortunate that they no longer find themselves in this situation. Slavery has been abolished in this country and all US citizens is now free people with equal rights.

This allows people access to the same things such as equal opportunities and employment opportunities. There is no a longer situation where certain employment opportunities is only allowed if you are male. Female’s citizens in the US is no longer subjected to this kind of discrimination.

We also have to consider the fact that freedom in this country was not easily accomplished but they were many martyrs, people were sacrificed for the liberty which we now enjoy. There were people such as Martin Luther King Jr. who was willing to sacrifice everything in order to ensure a better way of life for all US citizens regardless of culture or background.

This was really an extraordinary person who was able to analyze the situation in the US and he was able to change the mind of people and to bring about the formation of new ideas and beliefs which eventually resulted in a changed society.

Many of the freedom which we experience as citizens in the US can attributed to the unceasing labors of Martin Luther King Jr. Assistance in the writing of essays can be obtained from CustomWritings.

Appreciation for our way of life

It is often said that people do not appreciate something until that thing is lost. However there are millions of people who grew up in a US where there was no real liberty for all the citizens of this country.

It required real sacrifices to bring about our current way of life and it’s only when this is fully understood by all US citizens that we can truly appreciate what we have today and then we can really take the necessary measures to ensure that we are able to protect our basic human rights.

Then we only have to look at other countries who has not yet reached the same conclusions which has been reached by people in the US and therefore they are still basically slaves to their convictions and way of government. This is why a lot more has to be done to contribute and to maintain the current level of US independence and liberty. The more we learn about this subject, the better off we will all be.
