Best ways to keep your WordPress site safe

Close to 19% of all websites on the internet use WordPress software to organize their internal system functions. It’s not hard to see why, as the back end of WordPress sites are extremely user-friendly, making them the top choice of many webmasters.

However, the commonality of this platform makes them a very attractive target for hackers and cybercriminals. What are the best ways to keep your WordPress site safe? This post will give you several ideas to keep your presence on the web free of unwelcome visitors.

1) Download a comprehensive security plugin

One of the easiest ways to keep your site clear of viruses and malware is to download a security plugin to your WordPress back end. Of all the options available on the market, SiteLock is one of the best overall programs.

Despite what you may have heard about the supposed SiteLock scam (which is a myth based on unbalanced negative reviews), SiteLock is a security program that has a lot to offer your website.

It scans all the pages on your website on a regular basis, downloads malware definitions as soon as they are discovered in the wild, and displays a trust label that lets visitors know that your site is protected against the worst the web has to offer.

2) Always update to the latest version of WordPress

As annoying as it is to log into your website to update it to the latest version of WordPress, this simple action will keep you safe from security weaknesses that are uncovered periodically in this popular web platform’s code.

Many of the minor updates to WordPress contain patches that close loopholes that a hacker could use to break into your site, so don’t be lazy about it: Take two minutes to go into your back end and click the update button when a new version is ready to be downloaded.

3) Keep all plugins and themes up to date

While you’re at it, be sure to update all plugins and themes while you are in the update tab of your WordPress back end. Clicking a few buttons is all it takes to update your plugins and themes, as every one that has an update available will have a check box to their left.

Above all the plugins and themes, there will be a box that will select every one in the list when checked. Click it, scroll to the bottom, and hit the update button.

In mere seconds, your site will be protected from exploits that take advantage of poorly coded plugins, so don’t neglect your updates tab when it tells you that new downloads are available.

4) Change your administrator name from ‘admin’

You would be shocked at how many people give away half their login simply by not changing the default administrator user name from ‘admin’ to anything else.

The first user name that hackers try is ‘admin’, as most people are too lazy to shift away from this default user name.

Don’t make a cyber criminal’s job easy: rename your administrator user name to something that is not easily guessable, and you will make it that much tougher for them to compromise your web properties.

Is Your Project on Schedule?

"Contractors Review Plans" by the US Army Corps of Engineers, used in accordance with CC BY 2.0

When you have commercial and/or residential projects under construction, you know that you invariably are up against deadlines.

That being the case, it is important that you make sure all your products, services, not to mention your employees both in and out of the field, are ready to go.

Whether you are working on a major outdoor commercial project or a sizable indoor residential project, you don’t get paid to miss deadlines.

Yes, weather and other circumstances can (and oftentimes do) come into play, but you find a means to get around them, allowing you to complete your work on time, making for happy customers when all is said and done.

If meeting deadlines is something you have found to be a bit of a challenge over time, work on completing those deadlines sooner rather than later.

Products and Services Must Be Ready

One of the ways to all but guarantee your projects will make their deadlines is by reviewing the products and services you use for each and every project you are tasked with on a regular basis, checking for any hiccups along the way.

For example, if you use and/or sell plastic injection molding nozzles, review them regularly to be sure they are up to snuff with whatever projects you are using them for.

One of the ways to go about this is by reviewing the different companies offering such nozzles, valves, other injection products etc.

Some of the items to look at include:

  1. Company history – Where you buy products and services from goes a long way in whether or not you meet your customer expectations. Is your vendor good at meeting deadlines when it comes to supplying you with your needs? If they have a track record of meeting those deadlines, all inclinations are you should stick with them. On the other hand, those having a so-so record of meeting timetables need to be brought back under reconsideration. The last thing you need and want is having your customers upset with you because you failed a deadline, failure that originated in not getting the desired parts in time;
  2. Timing of your projects – If you’re doing any outdoor construction and/or renovations, the time of the year certainly can play a factor. For example, having a construction or renovation business in Buffalo does limit you during the wintertime in terms of how much outdoor work you can typically fit in. The best road to take here is making sure you schedule as much work as possible before winter typically sets in. In some cases, you will catch some breaks and have decent wintertime weather, though you should not count on it as a given. Also make sure any parts you are using (especially in outdoor instances) like nozzles, valves etc. can hold up to biting cold weather conditions. If you have parts that will not service you and your customers in dire winter weather, it becomes both a financial expense and ultimately a PR one for your business. The bottom line is you don’t want to waste the time of customers nor that of your employees;
  3. Being honest with customers – One other important area that you should never overlook is being up front with your customers. For instance, if your project is running behind (for whatever reason), don’t try and paint a rosy picture with the respective customer or customers. Always level with customers as to the projected timeline of completing the project, along with any snafus that currently are happening etc. One of the ways to keep customers for years to come (along of course with good work) is making sure you are honest with them at all times.

Keeping your projects (commercial and residential) on schedule doesn’t have to be difficult, especially when you work with vendors supplying you with the best parts possible.

In the end, meeting customer deadlines should always be a priority, not an option.

As 2016 winds down to a close, review how you’ve done this year to date with meeting those deadlines.

If you have fallen short in some instances, look to see how you can improve that moving forward in the New Year.

When you do that, everyone comes out ahead.

Top Three Useful Accessories for Smartphones

The smartphone market is packed full of accessories, from cases covered in diamantes, to fans that plug into your phone so that you can have your hair blowing in the wind for a selfie. With so many gimmicks out there, we thought today’s post should be on some of the most useful accessories on the market. Some are simple, some you won’t expect – enjoy!

Hama_Twiddle

Screen protectors

These days, screen protectors are becoming far more sophisticated than simply being scratch-resistant (although that’s still as important as ever). For one thing, a lot of people worry that others can read important bank details or other personal information off their phone when stood next to them in the street.

It sounds like the 3M Privacy Screen Protector is for you; you’ll see everything crystal clear, while those around you will only see a darkened screen. Or how about a glare protector for people with sensitive eyes who find it difficult to read their phone in bright sunlight?

Battery-Powered case

How many times have you been out and about, whether it’s a shopping day or an important business meeting, and your phone dies? It happens all too often, but hopefully not for much longer, as you’ll be able to fall back on the Mophie juice pack air charging case.

It’s thin, lightweight and will take you straight back to 100% battery power at the flip of a switch. You don’t need to worry about any sound issues either; there are forward-facing speaker ports for top audio quality, so you can just treat it like any other case!

The Tile

This is a truly genius invention for the smartphone era; a Tile is a small, card-looking device that can be attached to any object that you want to keep track of. It could be car keys, house keys or your spare pair of glasses! As long as you keep this handy, easy to use tracker with you, you’re all set to go.

Once you’ve attached it, simply download the companion app to see where your Tile is located. It’s water-resistant too in case you were wondering, and the battery lasts for a whole year. There’s even a handy addition to the app where you mark an item with a Tile attached as “Lost”, and other users around the world can help you find it!

At Geeksterlabs, we’re all about bringing you the best information, reviews and advice from the world of tech. With this in mind, it’s worth noting that the best thing you can do to protect your smartphone is to research. Look for the best places for repairs, the best software for security and the most common mishaps with your model.

For example, if you’re going away and you’re worried that your new smartphone might have an accident, it’s good to know that there’s an fixapplenow.com repair store in Pembroke Pines.

What did you think of these top three accessories? Do you think we’ve missed something important – if so, leave us a comment!

Does Someone Else Know Your Identity Too?

Does Someone Else Know Your Identity? Some shadowy hacker might...
Photo by CC user YBS 999 on Wikimedia Commons

Your personal identity information (especially as it pertains to finances) should be one of your most closely guarded secrets, yes? Having said that, does someone else know your identity?

While most consumers take this question to heart, others are not quite as thoughtful. In fact, some prove to be downright careless.

In a day and age where identity theft can set you back for a number of years, avoiding it should always be a high priority.

Even though there are certain events you need to put in motion to best protect your identity, much of it centers on having the right identity theft protection in place. When you have that, you are already a step ahead of the criminals.

With that in mind, how will you go about making sure someone else (notably online criminals) does not know your identity?

Take a Stance Against Online Criminals

So that you can decrease the chances you will become a victim of identity theft, start out by making sure you have a reliable defense against these criminals.

That all starts by finding the best identity theft protection service out there, one that will have your back from the day you begin using the product.

Finding such a service can be a little tedious, but the time and effort you invest in doing just that will ultimately prove well worth it.

Whether you are swayed to go with LifeLock identity protection or another such provider, make sure you vet each and every company you consider.

For starters, look at how long they have been in business?

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with considering newer companies on the market, those having been around for a number of years tend to be a better bet. The experience, plus learning what does and does not work over time, typically adds up to a better result for the consumer when all is said and done.

Secondly, never underestimate the importance of customer service.

As great as a company’s product may be, it is an even better overall brand when its customer service is as good as can be.

Once you have a provider selected, you may have simple questions or possibly even run into a snafu or two at some point and time. This is why customer service can never be taken for granted.

One of the ways to better determine how stout a company’s customer service is will be by asking family members (outside your home), friends, even co-workers, about which I.D. protection service they opted to go with.

In today’s business world, most companies know that wasting the time of customers is a sure ticket to ultimately losing their business. Find that provider willing to go the extra mile for you without hesitation.

You Must Be Responsible Too

With the right provider on your side monitoring your financial details, the rest pretty much all boils down to you.

Even with a solid identity theft monitoring provider backing you up that does not mean you are 100 percent immune from those wishing to do you harm, notably in terms of your finances.

Make sure you do not voluntarily give out any personal information, information that could easily come back to haunt you.

Just as you would not leave a credit card, your bank account number, your Social Security I.D. etc. sitting around in public places for the entire world to see, it is imperative you cover your tracks online too.

If you plan on traveling over the summer or at any point during the year, be careful when using computers in public places, places including hotels and libraries.

Since it is hard for you (or any traveler for that matter) to know with 100 percent certainty as to whether or not the server you are on is totally safe, err on the side of caution.

In the event you need to do any online banking or other personal financial matters while traveling, do them on your mobile device (assuming that is that it is already protected).

Keeping identity theft thieves and other online criminals with ill intent at bay can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be a losing proposition.

Just remember that there are services out there to assist you, services to keep someone else from knowing your identity.

Save your iPhone – Use a Skin

iPhones are both expensive and fragile. They’re also attached to you by the hip, going wherever your day takes you. If you expect to be able to use your Apple Pay while on the office’s coffee run or Google Maps to find the best route to your dinner date, you’re going to want your phone to withstand anything you throw at it. When on the look-out for the top security and protection, there’s no better way to save your iPhone than with a 3M vinyl skin.

Save your iPhone from damage by getting a tough protective skin for it

You may know this form of protection by its other name: a decal. But a skin does way more than what the term ‘decal’ implies. Besides adding a pop of color to your phone, the vinyl material of an iPhone skin is incredibly resilient against scratches, scuffs, and other cosmetic damages that can ruin the sleek, polished looks of the smartphone. They’re also a great way to defend against the build-up of grease and grime that can clog the phone’s buttons or dirty its backing.

On your search for the best skins iPhone users can hope for, you’ll encounter a lot of companies offering intriguing styles. Unfortunately, not all of them will be able to back up their fashion sense with protection. Not all skin creators are dedicated to your iPhone’s well-being like the designers at dbrand, where they put security first. They uphold their promises of superior protection by starting with high quality 3M vinyl. They’ve developed a highly refined process wherein they can cut this material with the utmost precision, affording their skins a fit that matches Apple’s design down to the micro-millimeter. The best iphone skins at dbrand.com add only 0.23 mm once applied, offering a slim addition that fits.

Of course, once you find a provider that can guarantee well-fitted protection, then you can turn your attention to its looks. Check out the amazing selection of designs available online. In terms of functionality, Apple is one of the greatest manufacturers of phones right now, but the company’s dedicated to a minimalist style that doesn’t mesh with everyone’s personality. Luckily, iPhone skins can add a punch of color (like magenta, blue, or red to name a few) or a sense of individuality with textures (like concrete, wood, and carbon fiber).

In a sea of look-a-like iPhones, you neon pink carbon fiber will certainly turn heads, but its beauty is more than skin deep. Backed by durable 3M vinyl, it’s the best way to defend your smartphone, so it’s ready to take on the day and go wherever you need to take it. Invest in the top security for your iPhone. You won’t be disappointed.

Lost access to your lifeline? Dial-in to unlock a phone today

Knowing how to unlock a phone can save you much stress in the future...

Photo by http://photos.oliur.com/ and https://www.pexels.com

For many consumers, their phones are pretty much their entire lives.

Whether they run their own small businesses, work for others, or are just regular consumers going about their business on a daily basis, staying connected to the outside world is oftentimes done via the phone.

Stop for a moment yourself and think about what happens when you misplace your phone or get locked out of it. How soon until that sense of panic sets in?

Whether you lose your phone or have trouble getting into it, having the right help available when you need to unlock a phone is critical.

With that being the case, how much time and effort do you put into finding the right provider for your phone?

Connect with the Right Phone Provider

So that you can choose the best phone option from day one for your needs, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Best offers – You will undoubtedly be searching for the best provider at the best rates. So that you can locate such deals, make sure you do your research. Such research can be done both in-person (visiting stores, talking to others who may have recently purchased new phones etc.) and by going online. Look to see what types of contact (if any) are included and/or required. Depending on the time of year, providers may be running special deals, so keep your eyes open for those too;
  •

  • Customer service – As important as quality and price of any piece of merchandise is that you ever purchase, the provider’s level of customer service can never be taken for granted. You may have the best phone in the world, but how is that provider and/or service when you go to them with an issue or question? Do they respond immediately? Do they keep you waiting (literally on hold) for a long period of time? Do they provide you with successful responses more times than failures? Having a phone provider give you unparalleled customer service should never be taken for granted. If the situation calls where you need to use Unlock-Network to unlock your phone, having the right company by your side for this task is crucial. Being locked out of your phone can be one of the most frustrating things to happen to you, especially if you need your phone for an emergency matter such as a health issue, broken down vehicle etc. Always remember to gauge the level of customer service you receive in any phone matter, allowing you to dial-in to where you will best be served;
  •

  • Protecting your phone – Whether for business or pleasure, your cell phone should be secured at all times. What would happen if you accidentally misplaced your phone or it was stolen? What kind of personal or small business information do you have on there that could be damaging if it fell into the wrong hands? Just like your wallet or purse, you don’t want your personal phone getting away from you. If it does, trying to locate it typically comes down to dialing the number to see if you get a nearby ring, asking those you were around last if they have spotted and/or found your phone, or going to the painful choice of having to acquire a new phone. As a preventative measure, never store financial information or other such sensitive data on your phone. If the phone is lost, you could find your finances targeted and/or hacked into. As for physical protection of your phone, handle it with care at all times. Dropping a smartphone just once could lead to having to replace it, something that typically does not come cheaply.

If you use your phone minimally at best, even getting locked out of it once can be a frustrating time.

When you purchase whatever cell phone is best for your needs, be sure to learn as much about the item as possible. In doing so; lessen the chances of having issues with it down the road.

For those times when you are locked out or your phone simply is not living up to the standards you expected of it when purchased, make sure you seek remedies to all but eliminate the problem/s from ever happening again.

Is Your Business Wasting Time?

What is the biggest challenge or challenges in your mind of running your business?

Some business owners will automatically point to having to manage workers, while others will note keeping within a budget can prove quite the challenge at times. Still others single out the issue of having to properly market and/or advertise their brands.

One item that can oftentimes go unnoticed is making sure you’re properly using technology.

With all that technology has to offer your business, you would almost be irresponsible not to use it to your advantage.

Not only can technology ultimately save you money over time, but it can also speed your daily tasks up, leaving customers happier with the services you provide.

4972420374_f67404cc63_o

That said is your business wasting time?

Make the Most of Your Time

In today’s fast-paced business world, not meeting the demands of your customers is akin to throwing money out the window.

Your customers expect a level of service that is second to none, so make sure not to disappoint them.

So, what are some of the ways you can best service your customers?

Among these would be:

  1. Technology – For starters, never underestimate the power and precision of technology. As an example, if you run a small medical practice, it is safe to say that you have a fair amount of patients coming in on a daily basis during the week. With this in mind, what are you doing to make sure they get in and out in a fairly fast amount of time? If you are seeing a backlog being created on a fairly regular basis, you run the risk of not only upsetting some of them, but in fact losing a number of them. In order to minimize such risks, have you looked at different software programs that can speed up their visits, yet still deliver quality care at the same time? Whether you opt for Revenuexl.com or another such product, you can see a difference in no time. The benefits to your medical practice would include shorter waiting periods for patients to be seen by a medical professional, easier means with which to bill customers and the ability to record and analyze payment trends. In all, the customer comes out ahead due to the fact he or she is not saddled with long waiting times, while your business also wins as a result of less time dealing with mounds of paperwork;
  2. Interaction – While you never want to overdo it when it comes to interacting with customers, you can’t expect them to be very loyal if you simply view them as nothing more than a number. That said you should make it known that each and every one of them is a priority to you. By being active on the Internet with both a website and a social media presence, you show them you are pretty much accessible to them 24/7. While your physical office hours are limited, having an active presence online allows you to not only provide them with information such as blog posts, interactive guides, podcasts, videos and more, but also engagement via social media. When a customer contacts you with a question and/or issue through your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other such social networking venue, don’t waste time in responding. Customers like it when they see that a business they deal with takes them seriously, along with doing the best job to respond to their needs;
  3. Solutions – Finally, having a zest for technology in your business allows you to better solve problems. As an example, if you’re medical practice relies entirely on paperwork to add up bills etc. it is easy to make an error. Such an error can not only upset customers, but it can also lead to a delay in your ability to receive compensation for your services. With the right software program in place, the technology takes care of crunching the numbers for you. In doing so, you save time and frustration in getting your invoices out.

There are many ways by which your business may be wasting time and you are not even aware of it.

Take the time to see how technology can improve your business functions, allowing wasted time to go by the wayside.

Don’t Make Identity Theft Part of Your Lifestyle

When things are going great, life can be as good as it gets.

You have a good job, money is not an everyday worry, you live in a nice home or apartment, your family and friends are healthy and safe, and the list goes on and on. Sounds pretty good, yes?

16794969011_1b7d649fb4

Now stop for a moment and image how that ideal life can be turned upside down when you’re the victim of identity theft.

In just a short period of time, that life you so enjoyed can be turned on its ears, leaving you feeling helpless and potentially in a major financial hole.

Keep Identity Theft Thieves at Bay

So that you can keep those at bay who would do you financial harm, remember these tidbits:

  • Choose How to Protect Your Identity – Your first order of business is making sure your identity (particularly your financial well-being) is protected as much as possible. You may be at a lost how best to do that, but there are companies and services out there such as ITPBureau.com to assist you. When working with such businesses, they are experts in narrowing down the field of identity theft providers, giving you more knowledge of which one best fits your identity theft protection needs. By comparing a number of providers, they can match you up, giving you more peace of mind;
  • Don’t Be Careless with Your Identity – Having the best identity theft provider around won’t mean all that much if in fact you are careless with your identity, notably your financial persona. It is important that you always guard your financial identity (credit and debit cards, bank account info, your Social Security number, PIN numbers for important financial items etc.). As identity theft thieves become even better with compromising technology and using it to their advantage, it is all the more important that you avoid being careless with your data. If someone calls you and poses as a business owner, make sure you do not give out sensitive info like a SSN or other personal identification. In many cases, that “business” calling you is actually an I.D. theft criminal, hoping you will provide him or her with data they need to become a nuisance in your life. It just takes one slip-up on your end to give a thief or thieves an invitation into your financial world;
  • Public Places Can Be Dangerous – Never stop yourself from going out in public (see more below), but be careful when you do. Stop and think for a moment about how many times over the years you’ve likely exposed your credit card, left a financial receipt behind, and so on. You may have gotten lucky and not been the victim of an identity theft crime at the time, but chalk that up as just that, luck. If you’re out a restaurant, make sure your waiter or waitress takes the merchant’s copy of the receipt with them, avoiding having it sit on the table while other people are coming and going;
  • Careful When Traveling – You should never shy away from travel when you have the opportunity, but do it so carefully. Identity theft thieves oftentimes will target a hotel or motel, figuring there are golden opportunities awaiting them to catch travelers with their guards down. Even though you do not need to be obsessive about it, don’t leave your laptop (if you travel with it for business or personal reasons) sitting around with sensitive data on the screen. When out of your room, avoid leaving credit cards behind on a table or any information that leads to your bank account. While you’d like to think most individuals working in hotels and motels are honest, is it worth the risk of having your financial life turned upside down?

Your lifestyle should be one of hard work and lots of fun when the work day is over.

Don’t make the job easy for identity theft thieves; keep them working overtime in trying to penetrate your financial world.

If you want to live a lifestyle that is free of financial headaches from criminals, take the time to review what you’re doing right protecting your identity, along with seeing where you need a little reinforcement.

The Rise of Automation in the Food Processing Industry

The emergence of automation in the food industry has been slower than in other industries. There are many reasons why this is so, but the one that’s most often cited is because food, unlike other products, differs greatly in its shape and consistency, presenting a formidable challenge for those looking to automate food processing systems.

organic-75585_640

Traditional food processing systems

Traditional food manufacturing facilities are essentially just giant kitchens, with food prepared in much the same fashion as it was at home. Of course, larger companies were quick to see the benefits of automation where they could, for example with packaging and palletizing. However, advancements in ‘pick-and-place’ robot technology meant that food manufacturers could move automation further along, onto the production lines as well.

Even so, most such systems can only be installed on long-life, high-volume production lines. For smaller manufacturers it means they have been much slower in the move towards automation. They have faced challenges such as limited low-cost labor and expertise, market volatility, and a general consensus that the industry is unsuitable for automation.

However, faced with pressures such as the decline in the availability of low-cost labor, and a demand for assured hygienic products, automation has started to be looked at seriously.

Food manufacturing automation

Those driving forces have seen a rapid increase in the adoption of automation by the industry, that’s also been spurred by advancements in robotics and electromechanical systems that are better able to deal with the challenges of the food industry.

To begin with, automation in food production was focused at the end of the production line, with robot machines being used in the packaging products. Robots are perfect for this task, and this led to a demand for machines that could work further up the production line and fulfill pick-and-place tasks instead of humans.

That demand was met with the introduction of Delta robots, which are now built by several manufacturers. Delta Robots are designed to operate quickly, and can perform around 100 to 120 picks per minute on light payloads of 1 to 2 kilograms. Similar advances in technology have led to the development of flexible effectors that can reliably pick up most food products without damaging or contaminating them.

Future automation in food processing

In the coming years, food processing procedures won’t change much. However, the incidence of manual labor in the industry is all set to decline, as the market will be driven towards automation by outside market forces. One of the greatest difficulties the food processing industry faces is addressing the skills gap that automation will bring, such as finding enough skilled engineers to maintain the machines. As such, this demand for newer, skilled labor will ensure that manual laborers can move on to new opportunities.
